PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Author Steven O'Casey shares his unique brand of "Christian existentialism" in his new collection of short stories, poetry and song lyrics, "My Thoughts and Other Spirits" (published by AuthorHouse - http://www.authorhouse.com/).

With a focus on life, the love of life, love, the spiritual world and understanding mankind, O'Casey writes on a broad array of subject matter. These stories and poems illustrate the unpredictable nature of life and the possibility of miracles in the everyday world.

In the story "The Long Sleep," a man falls into a coma after the shock of a crime committed by his brother causes him to fall from his horse. For more than 20 years, the man's sister cares for him, though he is completely unresponsive. Unbeknownst to them, the clot that caused his coma was dissolving as time passed. When the man awakes after 20 years, his sister is shocked.

"The message of this story is that nothing is ever definite," O'Casey says. "Miracles can happen, and quite often do."

The poems are equally positive in theme. "A Poem Written at Night" illustrates his unique, introspective style:

Drifting thoughts, words that wisp/ and waver from topic
to topic./ Think of love, talk to a friend,/ you grasp,
reach, you almost touch;/ they're almost there for
company./ You envision peace in a landscape,/ serene and
plush with foliage./ Splashed with the glimmering,/ cool,
blue water,/ of clean freshwater lake;/ a mountain where
you may someday reside./ Stir a bit, light your smoke;/
there's more to be thought./ The importance is good,
though,/ it's nighttime./ The end of a yearlong day,/
peace is at hand, the fighting is over,/ the same line
for a new armistice.

"My real intent, which [readers] will especially realize with my song lyrics, is to entertain people," he writes.

O'Casey's first love was the theater. He acted in high school plays and at the college level while attending Lemoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. He also performed in the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival for a season and recorded nine roles for a sound performance of "A Christmas Carol" for Cleveland radio. He gave acting up for his new creative endeavor: writing. He continues to live and write in Ohio. "My Thoughts and Other Spirits" is his first book, but he hopes to write more in the future.
