NEW YORK, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Conference Board announced today that the leading index for Korea increased 0.5 percent, while the coincident index increased 0.2 percent in May.

-- The leading index increased sharply in May following three consecutive
declines. Stock prices, index of inventories to shipments (inverted),
and value of machinery orders were the largest positive contributions
to the index this month. The six-month growth rate of the leading
index has slowed to a 0.1 percent rate (a 0.1 percent annual rate) in
May. Although this is an improvement from the -0.7 percent rate in
March, it is well below the 2.0-4.0 percent rate in late 2006. However,
the strengths and weaknesses among the leading indicators have become
somewhat balanced in the last two months.
-- The coincident index increased again in May, and the strength in the
index continued to be widespread. At the same time, real GDP grew at a
3.6 percent annual rate in the first quarter of 2007, slightly down
from a 4.4 percent average annual rate in the second half of 2006.
Despite the increase in May, the moderation in the growth rate of the
leading index since late 2006 so far suggests that slow to moderate
economic growth is likely to continue in the near term.

LEADING INDICATORS. Four of the seven components that make up the leading index increased in May. The positive contributors -- from the largest positive contributor to the smallest -- were stock prices, the (inverted) index of inventories to shipments, value of machinery orders, and real exports FOB. Negative contributors -- from the largest negative contributor to the smallest -- were private construction orders, the (inverted) yield of government public bonds, and letter of credit arrivals.

With the 0.5 percent increase in May, the leading index now stands at 157.7 (1990=100). Based on revised data, this index declined 0.2 percent in April and declined 0.6 percent in March. During the six-month span through May, the leading index increased 0.1 percent, with three of the seven components advancing (diffusion index, six-month span equals 57.1 percent).

COINCIDENT INDICATORS. Three of the four components that make up the coincident index increased in May. The positive contributors to the leading index -- in order from the largest positive contributor to the smallest -- were the wholesale and retail sales component, industrial production, and total employment. Monthly cash earnings declined in May.

With the 0.2 percent increase in May, the coincident index now stands at 167.6 (1990=100). Based on revised data, this index increased 1.0 percent in April and decreased 1.3 percent in March. During the six-month span through May, the coincident index increased 0.9 percent, with three of the four components advancing (diffusion index, six-month span equals 75.0 percent).

Platts Survey: OPEC Oil Output Up Slightly in June, Well Above Target

LONDON, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The 10 members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) bound by the group's crude oil output agreements boosted production by 40,000 barrels per day (b/d) to 26.6 million b/d in June, from a revised May level of 26.56 million b/d, a Platts survey showed July 11. This is well above the 25.8 million b/d production target set in February by the so-called OPEC-10.

Total OPEC output, including volumes from Iraq and new member Angola, averaged 30.22 million b/d in June, slightly higher than a revised figure of 30.21 million b/d for May, the survey showed. Iraq does not participate in OPEC output agreements, while Angola, whose membership of the group began in January, has yet to accept or be allocated any output target.

Small volume increases totalling 80,000 b/d from Angola, Iran, Nigeria and the UAE were almost completely offset by output decreases totalling 70,000 b/d from Iraq, Indonesia and Venezuela.

Nigerian production in May has been revised downward to 2.05 million b/d from 2.13 million b/d. In June, the survey found Nigerian production to have risen to 2.08 million b/d from the revised May level.

The International Energy Agency has called on OPEC to increase production ahead of the winter to ensure consumer stocks are adequate. OPEC has insisted that there is no current need for additional supply from its members but that it stands ready to produce more crude if this becomes necessary.

"Given what groups such as the International Energy Agency are saying is required for supply and demand to stay balanced in the second half of the year, consumers can't view this latest report as anything but discouraging," says John Kingston, Platts global director of oil. "Particularly worrisome is the fact that in the best one-step-forward-one-step-back practice, the production gains that were recorded were offset by losses elsewhere, including Venezuela. A supply- demand balance that many see as a squeeze now, could be much tighter by the end of the year."

OPEC is next scheduled to meet on September 11 in Vienna, where it has its headquarters. The group last met in mid-March, when it decided to keep in place the nominal 1.7 million b/d in output curbs agreed late last year.

NEH Awards Books for Young Readers on the 'Pursuit of Happiness' to All District of Columbia Public Libraries

Libraries receive We the People Bookshelf awards for the first time

WASHINGTON, July 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mrs. Lynne Cheney and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Chairman Bruce Cole announced today that the NEH has awarded free copies of classic books to all of the District of Columbia (D.C.) public libraries. They were joined for the announcement by the Chief Librarian of the D.C. Public Libraries, Ginnie Cooper, which was made at the Anacostia Interim Public Library. Each library will receive the 15 classic books on the theme of the "Pursuit of Happiness" from the We the People Bookshelf, along with four titles also offered in Spanish translation.

"Libraries serve as a nexus of knowledge and ideas for our citizens and students," said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. "We hope that the awarding of these bookshelves will allow young readers at the District of Columbia's libraries to gain a fuller sense of what the Declaration of Independence means when it asserts that all human beings 'are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.'"

The new awards are part of the Endowment's We the People program, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture. The We the People Bookshelf program will distribute 2,000 sets of books to neighborhood and public school libraries, as well as private schools, charter schools, tribal schools, and home school consortia in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each library will receive a set of the 15 books, four additional books in Spanish translation, a musical CD, posters, bookmarks, and other promotional materials from NEH through the American Library Association (ALA), which is working in partnership with the Endowment. As part of the award, libraries are organizing programs or events to raise awareness of these classic books and engage young readers.

The We the People Bookshelf on the "Pursuit of Happiness" contains the following books:

The National Archives Opens Federal Nixon Library, Releases Previously- Restricted Documents and Tapes

YORBA LINDA, Calif., July 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the National Archives and Records Administration opened the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. The new Library joins eleven other federally-operated libraries for Presidents from Herbert Hoover onward. Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein made the announcement at an 8 a.m. (PDT) ceremony for staff and friends at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, CA.

By agreement between the private Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace Foundation and the National Archives, control over the bulk of the facilities of the private Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace were transferred over to the federal government for use by the new Library. In addition, the transfer agreement gave to the Federal government presidential materials previously returned to President Nixon and his estate in the 1980s and 1990s. As a result, the National Archives today is marking the establishment of the new Library by releasing approximately 78,000 pages of previously restricted documents focusing on political activities of Richard Nixon and the Nixon administration.

The National Archives is also opening 11 1/2 hours of tape-recorded conversations revealing his thoughts on the 1972 Presidential and Congressional elections and his plans for the reorganization of his administration in its second term. These papers and many of the taped conversations are available due to a deed of gift from the private Nixon Foundation to the National Archives. The new Nixon Library also unveiled its web site at http://www.nixonlibrary.gov/.

"This is a long-awaited milestone in Presidential library history," said Professor Weinstein. "Historians, researchers, and the general public will eventually be able to come to this library and find all of President Nixon's materials under one roof."

Weinstein said that the transfer of the facility makes possible the eventual consolidation of Richard Nixon's pre-Presidential and post- Presidential materials, which have been housed in the private facility since 1990, with the official records of his administration that are currently at a National Archives facility in College Park, Maryland.

"President Nixon's administration is the best-documented Presidency in American history," Professor Weinstein added. "It will be an important destination for anyone interested in the Cold War, in U.S. relations with China and the Soviet Union, the Vietnam War and its impact at home, dramatic changes in the nation's economy, in the history of the Watergate scandal, and in the history of the Presidency.

"The new Nixon Library will be a nonpartisan facility that will provide an interactive, 360 degree view of the life and times of Richard Nixon," Professor Weinstein said, noting that the Library and Museum will be staffed by federal employees who report to the National Archives.

In 2006, Professor Weinstein designated presidential historian Timothy Naftali as the first director of the new Federal Nixon Library. Dr. Naftali emphasized that the new Library will be a major resource for everyone interested in modern American history. "The new Library belongs to the people of the United States," Dr. Naftali said. "It will be a center of discussion, debate, and scholarly exploration. Its mission is to inspire a love of history and critical thinking."

Background on Released Materials

The materials being released today were returned to Richard Nixon and his estate by the National Archives because they were deemed not to relate to the statutory duties of the President or relate to abuses of governmental power, as defined by the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act (PRMPA) of 1974 and its implementing public access regulations. As part of the agreement governing the transfer of the Nixon Library to the National Archives, the Foundation has donated these important materials to the National Archives to be released to the public.

Most of the documents being released today come from a special file created by the Nixon White House in 1972 for politically sensitive materials. In addition, the release includes documents from the files of his closest aides, including chief of staff H.R. Haldeman, domestic adviser John Ehrlichman, and political adviser Charles Colson. The National Archives is also releasing approximately 20,000 pages from the White House Central Files that had been returned to Nixon under PRMPA.

These materials provide new insight into the political strategies of the Nixon White House and Richard Nixon's 1968 and 1972 Presidential campaigns. They also shed new light on Richard Nixon's role as a political strategist, analyst and tactician. The materials include correspondence with or about many important politicians and public figures, including George H. W. Bush, Dwight Eisenhower, Billy Graham, Frank Sinatra, O. J. Simpson, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dole.

The tapes release comprises 165 conversations, totaling approximately 11 1/2 hours, secretly recorded between November 3, 1972, and November 19, 1972, that took place in the Oval Office, in the President's Old Executive Office Building (EOB) office, and on certain telephones in the Oval Office, the President's EOB office, and in the Lincoln Sitting Room in the residence of the White House.

The conversations capture President Nixon and his aides discussing the 1972 Presidential and congressional elections and the President's decision to reorganize his administration by requesting resignations from his appointees. The tapes also contain discussions between President Nixon and Henry Kissinger regarding negotiations with the governments of North and South Vietnam. This is the first partial release of the fifth chronological segment (November 1972 to July 1973) of Nixon White House tapes. The National Archives intends to release the remaining tapes from November 1972 in 2008.

The Nixon Foundation, as part of the transfer agreement, is donating to the National Archives approximately 800 hours from the Nixon White House tapes previously removed from the tapes according to PRMPA and its implementing public access regulations. All future releases will include the donated political conversations. online multimedia training and reference tool that helps physicians, medical
residents and students prepare for, perform and test their knowledge of 39
top medical procedures. Procedures Consult helps physicians visualize and
review procedures through a blend of text, video, animation and
illustrations. By providing speedy access to customized information on
procedures that a physician may not have studied or conducted for a period of
time, Procedures Consult helps reduce the potential for medical errors and
complications.

Physicians who access the Web-based product can view a video of a common
procedure such as a central line placement or nasogastric intubation. Each
procedure includes video of what physicians see when doing the procedure and
high-quality animation of aspects that the physician can't see but needs to
visualize. Physicians can also jump to any section of a video or repeat
specific sections and step-by-step text and illustrations accompany each
procedure. Related information such as indications, contraindications,
anatomy, equipment and complications are also included.

See One, Do One, Teach One now safer

Procedures Consult adds a layer of safety to the medical education adage
"See One - Do One - Teach One," which refers to how physicians typically see
a procedure demonstrated, perform the procedure and then teach the procedure
to a physician colleague. Procedures Consult allows physicians to see a video
of an expert performing a procedure before actually doing it themselves, once
or as many times as needed. Physicians typically demonstrate procedures only
when patients are available, but Procedures Consult allows physicians to
access procedures 24/7 and view them repeatedly, until they fully understand
the procedure.

Once students and residents have reviewed the material on Procedures
Consult, they can complete an online test to evaluate their knowledge.
Physician executives and faculty members can then track the performance of a
large population of trainees using online reports.

Based on input from more than 100 educators, residents and medical
students, Elsevier focused the launch of Procedures Consult on common
high-risk/high volume procedures such as thoracentesis, central venous
catherization, lumbar puncture, basic airway management, digital nerve block,
arterial blood gas sampling, stapling devices, defibrillation, and arterial
cannulation, as well as some procedures like needle thoracostomy which are

CEO Confidence Declines, The Conference Board Reports

NEW YORK, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Conference Board Measure of CEO Confidence, which had improved to 53 in the first quarter of 2007, fell to 45 in the second quarter. A reading of more than 50 points reflects more positive than negative responses. The survey includes about 100 business leaders in a wide range of industries.

Says Lynn Franco, Director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center: "Several quarters of sluggish economic growth have taken a toll on CEOs' confidence, erasing two quarters of improvement. Looking ahead, CEOs do not expect a significant turnaround in conditions and profit expectations. Only a quarter expect profits to increase versus three-quarters last year, reflecting their pessimistic outlook."

CEOs' assessment of current economic conditions was little changed from earlier this year, with 23 percent of CEOs compared to 24 percent last quarter claiming the current economic environment is better. In assessing their own industries, however, business leaders were considerably less optimistic. Approximately 23 percent claim conditions are better, down from about 37 percent in the first quarter.

CEOs are less optimistic about the short-term outlook than last quarter. Now, just 17 percent of business leaders expect economic conditions to improve in the next six months, down from 27 percent last quarter. Expectations for their own industries were also significantly less positive, with 17 percent anticipating an improvement, down from 35 percent last quarter.

Moderate Profit Expectations

On the issue of profit expectations over the next 12 months, only 22 percent of executives anticipate increases. Executives engaged in the non- durable goods industry are the most optimistic, with 18 percent expecting profits to increase. Executives in the durable goods industry are a close second, with 11 percent anticipating a rise in profits.

Among chief executive officers who expect profits to increase, 46 percent believe technology will drive profits up, while 29 percent cite price increases as the main source of improvement. Only 17 percent foresee market/demand growth as a driver of growth and the remaining 8 percent cite cost reductions.

New Private Equity Council White Paper Details PE's Role in Driving Economic Growth and Investment

WASHINGTON, July 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Private equity is an integral part of the American economy that significantly strengthens companies and contributes hundreds of billions of dollars in profits to pension funds, university endowments, charitable foundations and other private equity investors, according to a new white paper released today by the Private Equity Council.

The report, "Public Value: A Primer on Private Equity," is a reader- friendly introduction to the world of private equity that draws on independent research and real-life examples to describe how private equity investments build better companies and strengthen retirement funds, endowments and foundations, which together represent the single largest group of private equity investors.

The white paper was posted today on the Private Equity Council's new web site at http://www.privateequitycouncil.org/. In addition to the "Public Value" report, the PEC web site offers access to a wide range of information about the contributions that private equity investment firms make to the national and global economies. The site includes fact sheets, position papers, press releases, backgrounders and links to other private equity-related web sites.

"Private equity has proven itself to be a powerful engine for creating economic value for investors, for retirees, for many workers and for institutional investors -- including universities and foundations that are better able to meet their educational and charitable objectives as a result of their private equity investments. Moreover, the role PE firms play in improving the performance of companies of all kinds in all sectors increases productivity and competitiveness," the report concludes.

Statistics cited in the "Public Value" report show that private equity firms returned $430 billion in profits to their limited partner investors between 1991 and 2006 and that private equity investments substantially outperformed the public equity markets during the 25-year period beginning in 1980. During that period, top-quartile private equity funds generated annualized returns to investors of 39.1 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index posted average annual returns of 12.3 percent.

The report also cites research by Professor Josh Lerner of the Harvard Business School and Professor Jerry Cao of Boston University that concludes that companies that went public again after being acquired by private equity firms and operated by them for more than a year consistently outperformed the public equity markets and other IPOs.

"This report makes a compelling case that private equity firms play a critical role in creating real economic value for the companies they acquire, for the consumers those companies serve and for the pension funds, universities, charities and other institutions that invest in them," said Private Equity Council President Douglas Lowenstein. "We hope this report will make clear that private equity is neither a dark force nor a silver bullet, but instead an important tool for driving growth and investment in the American economy."

"Public Value" describes in detail how private equity investments work, how private equity firms generally return 80 percent of investment profits to their limited partners and how private equity firms build stronger companies. The paper uses the real-life examples of companies such as Dunkin' Brands, which owns Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, and SunGard, a major software developer and vendor, to make the point that private equity firms today rely on deep expertise, a performance culture, unique managerial capabilities and nimble ownership structures to drive performance improvements at the companies they acquire.

The report quotes Dunkin' Brands CEO Jon Luther's testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, in which he said, "The benefits of our new [private equity] ownership to our company have been enormous. Their financial expertise ... enabled us to make significant investments in our infrastructure and our growth initiatives ... They have opened to the door to opportunities that previously were beyond our reach."
