NBC 5, Telemundo 39 and the NBC Universal Foundation to Award $100,000 in Grants to North Texas Non-Profits

NBC 5, Telemundo 39 and the NBC Universal Foundation to Award $100,000 in Grants to North Texas Non-Profits

DALLAS and FORT WORTH, Texas, July 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The NBC Universal Foundation, NBC 5 / KXAS-TV and Telemundo 39 / KXTX-TV will award $100,000 in grants to four North Texas non-profit organizations as part of NBC Universal's on-going commitment to improving secondary education in our communities. The award presentation will take place on Friday, July 20, 2007 at the NBC 5 studios.

Tom O'Brien, president and general manager of NBC 5, and Jose Valle, vice president and general manager of Telemundo 39, will present checks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, Communities In Schools of Greater Tarrant County, Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas and Score a Goal in the Classroom.

"At NBC 5, we have a history of giving back to our community; it's a priority. North Texas is fortunate to have so many worthy organizations helping others in need, so we're thrilled to offer grants to four organizations that make a difference," said Tom O'Brien.

"It is indeed a privilege to be able to give these funds to local charities that help change our community in such positive ways," commented Jose Valle.

This NBC Universal corporate initiative targets cities with large NBC Universal employee populations and significant educational needs. The NBC Universal Foundation will award $1.25 million in grants to non-profits in six U.S. cities in 2007. It is the first year of funding for North Texas charities. North Texas employees from NBC Universal and parent company, General Electric, are actively involved with this effort, and will again have the opportunity to show their support by volunteering as mentors, tutors and career speakers.

NBC Universal grant recipients are chosen nationwide because of their impact on improving educational opportunities for sixth through twelfth grade students. The funding supports a wide range of programs, including career counseling, college test preparation, as well as developing digital literacy and utilizing theater performance to build cultural awareness. Organizations that received funding last year made significant progress in strengthening their students' academic performance.

The North Texas non-profit organizations benefiting are:

-- Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas (http://www.bgcdallas.org/)

NBC Universal Foundation funds will be used for the Collegiate STEPS program. This program is designed to help at-risk youth attend college and to prepare for the opportunity by visiting local campuses, learning about financial aid sources and attending financial planning workshops. An assigned mentor provides positive reinforcement and motivation to continue their education.

-- Communities In Schools of Greater Tarrant County (http://www.cistarrant.org/)

NBC Universal Foundation funds will be used to place a full-time, licensed social worker on campus to serve the students at KEYS Learning Center. KEYS Learning Center serves at-risk students ages16-21 that have been identified as having significant personal, academic and economic needs. KEYS offers the opportunity for dropouts and at-risk students to complete required coursework needed for high school graduation. Individualized instruction, flexible scheduling and a quality, caring staff are the keynotes to this approach.

-- Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas (http://www.girlsincdallas.org/)

Through the Young Women's Company (YWCo,) girls learn about operating their own business. A component of YWCo is a summer entrepreneurial camp developed by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. More than 750 girls ages 12 to 18 that attend Girl Inc.'s six centers participate in the Young Women's Company.

-- Score a Goal in the Classroom (http://www.scoreagoalintheclassroom.org/)

The NBC Universal Foundation funds will support the coordination and facilitation of "Success Rallies" as well as provide prizes for improved attendance and academic achievement awards. The grant will also fund recruitment, training and facilitation of speakers in the Speakers Bureau, as well as fund training and administration of adult mentors who participate in on-going mentoring programs. This year 4,730 volunteers will serve as mentors to help raise the level of education and honor heroes of our community -- teachers and school employees.

These are just some of the ways these organizations are planning to utilize the funds they will be awarded. For more information log on to http://www.nbc5i.com/community.

NBC 5 / KXAS-TV / nbc5i.com and Telemundo 39 / KXTX-TV are the NBC Universal

owned and operated media centers serving the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Thoughts and Other Spirits: Author Writes on Life, Love and Spirituality in New Collection

Thoughts and Other Spirits: Author Writes on Life, Love and Spirituality in New Collection

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Author Steven O'Casey shares his unique brand of "Christian existentialism" in his new collection of short stories, poetry and song lyrics, "My Thoughts and Other Spirits" (published by AuthorHouse - http://www.authorhouse.com/).

With a focus on life, the love of life, love, the spiritual world and understanding mankind, O'Casey writes on a broad array of subject matter. These stories and poems illustrate the unpredictable nature of life and the possibility of miracles in the everyday world.

In the story "The Long Sleep," a man falls into a coma after the shock of a crime committed by his brother causes him to fall from his horse. For more than 20 years, the man's sister cares for him, though he is completely unresponsive. Unbeknownst to them, the clot that caused his coma was dissolving as time passed. When the man awakes after 20 years, his sister is shocked.

"The message of this story is that nothing is ever definite," O'Casey says. "Miracles can happen, and quite often do."

The poems are equally positive in theme. "A Poem Written at Night" illustrates his unique, introspective style:

Drifting thoughts, words that wisp/ and waver from topic
to topic./ Think of love, talk to a friend,/ you grasp,
reach, you almost touch;/ they're almost there for
company./ You envision peace in a landscape,/ serene and
plush with foliage./ Splashed with the glimmering,/ cool,
blue water,/ of clean freshwater lake;/ a mountain where
you may someday reside./ Stir a bit, light your smoke;/
there's more to be thought./ The importance is good,
though,/ it's nighttime./ The end of a yearlong day,/
peace is at hand, the fighting is over,/ the same line
for a new armistice.

"My real intent, which [readers] will especially realize with my song lyrics, is to entertain people," he writes.

O'Casey's first love was the theater. He acted in high school plays and at the college level while attending Lemoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. He also performed in the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival for a season and recorded nine roles for a sound performance of "A Christmas Carol" for Cleveland radio. He gave acting up for his new creative endeavor: writing. He continues to live and write in Ohio. "My Thoughts and Other Spirits" is his first book, but he hopes to write more in the future.

Premiere Children's Literature Conference July 26 at Simmons College

Premiere Children's Literature Conference July 26 at Simmons College

BOSTON, July 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In an age when savvy children's books are more likely than ever to appear on adults' reading lists, one of the nation's premiere children's literature conferences will bring nationally recognized children's literature authors and illustrators to Simmons College in Boston, July 26-29, to discuss children's books as works of art.

This year's conference, titled "Food, Glorious Food!" will focus on the role of food as metaphor in children's literature. Among those attending the conference is national bestseller Sy Montgomery, author of "The Good Good Pig," who writes both adult and children's books. Other writers include Natalie Babbitt, author of "Tuck Everlasting;" Jack Gantos, author of the Rotten Ralph and the Joey Pigza books; and MacArthur Fellow David Macaulay, author of "The Way Things Work." Veteran illustrator Jerry Pinkney, who has created art for more than 75 books, including "John Henry," "The Ugly Duckling," and the "Patchwork Quilt," also will speak.

The biannual conference is hosted by the Center for the Study of Children's Literature at Simmons College, home of the nation's first Master of Arts in Children's Literature program. Organizers say the conference is a rare forum for national children's book collaborators, including authors, illustrators, book designers, and publishers, to gather and share ideas.

The event will take place in the Main College Building at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway in Boston.

In addition to offering a master of arts in children's literature (www.simmons.edu/gradstudies/liberal-arts/academics/childrens-literature/), the Center offers a master of fine arts in writing for children.

Simmons College (http://www.simmons.edu/) is a nationally recognized private university in Boston. It includes an undergraduate college for women and graduate programs for women and men in social work, health studies, library and information science, management, and liberal arts.

The 2007 SB20: World's Top Sustainable Stocks

The 2007 SB20: World's Top Sustainable Stocks

20 Companies Changing the World for the Better

NEW YORK, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- SustainableBusiness.com today announced its 2007 Sustainable Business 20 (SB20) List: The World's Top Sustainable Stocks. The SB20 list, in its sixth year, consists of 20 public companies that are having an important impact on creating an environmentally sustainable society.

The list is presented in the Progressive Investor newsletter, published by SustainableBusiness.com, which tracks sustainable stocks.

"Our goal is to create a list that showcases public companies that, over the past year, have made substantial progress in either greening their internal operations or growing a business based on an important green technology, says Rona Fried, Ph.D., SustainableBusiness.com CEO and Editor of Progressive Investor.

To choose the 20 companies, SustainableBusiness.com partnered with KLD Research & Analytics, which provided a preliminary universe of 50 global companies with strong "green" initiatives and solid financials. KLD also served as a judge along with five leading green investment analysts to decide on the final list.

Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy

This year, energy efficiency took center stage. Efficiency offers the least expensive, best economic returns, and most dramatic ways to reduce greenhouse emissions, simply by reducing energy consumption in the first place.

Comverge energy-management technologies save enormous amounts of energy by cutting peak demand, while keeping the filthiest fossil fuel plants off-line. Philips has been snapping up market share in LED lighting, advocating for and preparing to stop producing inefficient incandescents. Fuel Tech's technology cleans up the dirtiest fossil fuel plants, and Novozymes, "green chemicals" are keys to industrial efficiency and cellulosic biofuels.

REC is the world's most vertically integrated solar company; First Solar is the first public company to produce high volume, low cost thin film solar. Vestas, the world's premier wind company, has maintained its leadership position despite heavy competition. Ormat is the world geothermal leader, and Schmack Biogas is the world's leading biogas plant manufacturer, turning organic wastes into electricity, heat or fuels.

Green Building

For Land Securities, the UK's largest property owner, all new buildings meet green building standards, while it works to incorporate gray water, rainwater harvesting, FSC-certified wood, and Fair Trade/ Organic foods company-wide.

Interface continues its climb up "Mount Sustainability," innovating in the materials and processes used to make carpet tiles. Furniture maker Herman Miller, another stalwart sustainability leader, is 63% on its way to achieving its goal of Zero Ecological Footprint by 2020.

Consumer Products

Canon is making its products smaller and lighter, and has an aggressive target of cutting C02 emissions by 50% by 2010. Nike is using green design principles to transform its products, root out waste and toxics, and plans to be carbon neutral by 2015.

Natural Foods/ Natural Products

Groupe Danone, the world's largest dairy company, is converting more to organic dairy, sustainable agriculture. Its groundbreaking joint venture, Grameen Danone Foods, will create hundreds of jobs by manufacturing nutritionally dense, basic foods -- run on solar and biogas -- to low income populations in Bangladesh. It's a model for 50 plants in India over the next 10 years.

The world's largest retailer of organic/ natural products, Whole Foods, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, the leader in Fair Trade/ Organic coffee, have been on the SB20 since inception. They are exemplary models all around, and are largely responsible for the mainstreaming of natural foods/ sustainable coffee. Both companies are climate neutral.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, with over 600 restaurants, is making waves in the world of fast food by serving free range meats and integrating organic ingredients into its menus.

Miss Fido Manners) shows readers the best practices for flawless canine etiquette in a fun, humorous and easy-to-follow format. For a preview visit: http://www.missfidomanners.com/ .

More than a dog-training book, Miss Fido Manners is a finishing school primer for your dog. Pet etiquette is the art of understanding and behaving properly with your companion - whether traveling on vacation, visiting with a neighbor or at the veterinarian's office - dog owners have to be well-mannered and model citizens. Miss Fido explains how pet owners can conduct their behavior to influence a dog in a way that allows both parties to enjoy one another's company in all kinds of situations.

The book's additional features include tip boxes, illustrations, real-life examples, and helpful resources indispensable to the socially aware pet owner. With excellent veterinary care, nutrition and exercise to keep them healthy and happy; obedience training to teach them and their owners proper petiquette; and regular grooming and styling to smooth out ruff spots, any pooch that follows Miss Fido's dogma gives everybody something to chew on.

"Charlotte Reed has put together a very timely and ultimately useful book on a topic that has become increasingly important to pet owners and non-pet owners alike," notes Bob Vetere, president, American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. "Charlotte takes a very practical approach to dealing with potentially uncomfortable situations. Coupled with some of the new and innovative products on the market today, the guidelines in this book will make owning a pet an even more rewarding experience."

SC Magazine: Entrust IdentityGuard Earns Best Buy Award, Five-Star Rating

SC Magazine: Entrust IdentityGuard Earns Best Buy Award, Five-Star Rating

Competitive test applauds Entrust's versatile authentication platform for being a 'simple solution to complex problem'

DALLAS, July 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Entrust (NASDAQ:ENTU) and their award-winning versatile authentication platform, Entrust(R) IdentityGuard, received another prestigious accolade this month. SC Magazine, a well-respected IT security publication, named the solution as a "Best Buy" in their authentication group test, which featured side-by-side comparisons of the industry's leading authentication platforms.

A key component of a strategic layered security model, the Entrust IdentityGuard versatile authentication platform received a five-star overall rating -- only one of two vendors to do so -- and was hailed as "a simple solution to a complex problem, providing a single interface to manage two-factor authentication."

"Instead of inflexible point products, organizations continually seek comprehensive security solutions that are suited the authentication challenges of their consumer, enterprise and government environments," said Entrust Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Conner. "This latest external validation confirms that the Entrust IdentityGuard versatile authentication platform is stronger, easier to use and cost-efficient. In addition, all of its dynamic authentication options are available from a single vendor that offers a layered security approach to help address the different challenges most organizations experience, which include not only authentication, but also information protection, email security and even SSL."

The group review, which compared products from 11 total vendors, evaluated authentication solutions on the merits of performance, features, ease of use, documentation, support and value for the money. Competing authentication vendors tested included RSA, Vasco, Actividentity, Stealth, Aladdin, PassGo, Authenex, Crypto-Shield, SafeSign and Tri-D.

When comparing available product support, Entrust received a five-star rating in five of the six categories, topping all competing solutions.

In addition, the review referred to Entrust IdentityGuard as a "superior product" that "contains all the features of two-factor authentication." Competing vendors traditionally rely on one or two methods of authentication. Entrust IdentityGuard boasts a multitude of authentication choices, including grid cards, machine authentication, out-of-band, knowledge-based and one-time-passcode tokens, among others.

The Entrust IdentityGuard versatile authentication platform not only provides strong authentication, but also can help minimize operational challenges such as burdens to help desks and infrastructure maintenance. A self-service option provides the unique capability to confirm the identity of a user with substitute authentication options -- should the need arise -- effectively minimizing downtime and increasing efficiency.

CoreNet Global's 'The Leader' Magazine Turns a New Page

CoreNet Global's 'The Leader' Magazine Turns a New Page

Corporate real estate magazine is redesigned and introduces first-time web presence

ATLANTA, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- CoreNet Global, the world's leading professional association of corporate real estate executives, today announces the redesign of their member exclusive magazine, CoreNet Global's The Leader, and introduction of the Leader online.

"We are very excited about the overall direction in which CoreNet Global's The Leader is headed and about introducing a robust online component," said Tim Venable, editor of The Leader. "With the new format we created a visual platform that elevates the thought-leadership positioning of CoreNet Global within the corporate real estate arena."

CoreNet Global's extensive network of thought leaders represents an exclusive high-level source for editorial contribution, making the publication and CoreNet Global the source for the most cutting-edge strategic thinking on workplace and other management solutions.

Visually, the new format embraces the size and graphical elements of very contemporary, magazines, while still publishing a great deal of content. The style is right in line with top management consulting and business publications like the McKinsey Quarterly and the Harvard Business Review.

The new design of CoreNet Global's The Leader establishes a unique look and feel for internal content sections to facilitate reader experience and to deliver supporting information including complementary schemes for special sections to highlight unique editorial insertions. Readers will also be able to enjoy a greater number of shorter stories on subjects culled from reader demand. And, the magazine is printed on 100% recycled matte paper, in line with the corporate real estate industry's move towards more sustainable business practices.

The digital model will feature cutting edge graphic technology allowing users to easily simulate the turning of magazine pages as if the hard copy - including feature advertisements - were physically in front of them. The online version also has a convenient "tear" feature allowing users to easily share articles with others by simply "tearing" the page out of the magazine and forwarding along.

In preparation for the publication's next generation, a reader survey was administered from CoreNet Global's The Leader editorial staff, which learned that readers wanted more articles on topics ranging from workplace issues to location strategy, and from service delivery to emerging markets.

Additionally, a new editorial calendar has been developed outlining the topics to be covered and in which issues they are to appear.

CoreNet Global's The Leader is, and will continue to be, a member exclusive magazine, however, CoreNet Global will introduce The Leader online (www.corenetglobal.org/theleader) for public use and further education of the corporate real estate community. "The digital version is intended not only to educate but also to help drive membership," added Venable. "It will feature the same content that can be found in the magazine with occasional web exclusives."

Parents of Preschoolers Get Ready for Kindergarten With New Tips & Tools

Parents of Preschoolers Get Ready for Kindergarten With New Tips & Tools

Toolkit for Parents - Kindergarten Countdown DVD and The Tessy & Tab Reading Club Magazines Help Parents and Preschoolers Prepare for Kindergarten

PORTLAND, Ore., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The countdown to the start of the school year has officially begun. Preschoolers getting ready to start kindergarten may feel a little anxious as they get used to new routines, teachers and friends. Blue Lake Children's Publishing and Educational Productions have created a toolkit for parents to use to make the transition as easy as possible.

The Kindergarten Countdown Toolkit (www.tessyandtab.com/kindergarten/), answers the questions preschoolers most want to know, such as, "How will I get there? Who is my teacher? What do I do at kindergarten?" The toolkit contains an award-winning 18-minute DVD, five Tessy & Tab magazines about school- related activities and a kindergarten checklist.

"Education experts agree that it is important to help preschoolers imagine what kindergarten will be like by telling school-related stories, viewing videos or reading books about going to school, and rehearsing for kindergarten through pretend play," said Judy Johnston, CEO of Blue Lake Children's Publishing. "This toolkit provides practical tools for parents to help prepare their preschooler for the first day of school."

Designed for parents and children to watch together, educational Productions' Kindergarten Countdown DVD is a great conversation-starter that walks through all the steps of going to kindergarten "It shows children getting on the school bus, meeting new teachers, figuring out how to find the bathroom, and doing typical activities like listening to stories, playing outside, and making new friends," explains Linda Freedman, CEO of Educational Productions. "Seeing children just like themselves helps preschools trust that starting school is going to be a good experience."

Parents can use The Tessy & Tab Reading Club New School magazine as a fun visual explanation for what kinds of things to expect on their first day at kindergarten. They will also receive Love to Share, Favorite Fruits, Ouch! and Checkup Time, each focusing on different social skills and other important school-related activities.

The kindergarten checklist gives parents tips such as:

* Visit the school with your child. If possible, arrange a meeting with
the teacher. Learn where the bathrooms are and how they work
-- especially urinals for boys.
* Prepare to ride the bus by ensuring your child knows the bus number
and/or the driver.
* Practice a sleeping schedule for school. Begin putting your child to
bed 10-15 minutes earlier each night, and waking them earlier in the
morning so their sleeping schedule will be in place when school
starts.
* Make a list with your child of what can be packed for lunch and snacks
as well as what should be in your child's backpack each morning.
* Plan a special "First Day" family dinner. Make a fun meal and use the
meal time for discussing the first school day.
* And many more.

The Kindergarten Countdown Toolkit is available for purchase online at http://www.tessyandtab.com/kindergarten for $29.95.

New Book Release Heals Daughters' Souls and Honors Fathers using the Lost Art of Letter Writing

New Book Release Heals Daughters' Souls and Honors Fathers using the Lost Art of Letter Writing

FLORENCE, Mass., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Letters for Healing (http://www.lettersforhealing.com/) announces the release of their book "Letters to Fathers from Daughters: A Pathway to Healing and Hope" (ISBN: 978-1-932279-74-0). It honors the undeniably crucial bond between daughters and their dads from the daughters' perspective.

*(PHOTO: Send2Press.com/mediaboom/07-0717-LettersFa_72dpi.jpg)
*(Photo Caption: Cover of "Letters to Fathers from Daughters.")

Both authors used letter writing to heal their relationships with their fathers. "We wanted to provide an opportunity for daughters to say things left unsaid, and to promote healing and offer hope ... to not only those who contributed, but to all those who read it and are touched by others' journeys," according to the authors.

Originally compelled to find a way to encourage other women to connect with their fathers using letter writing, their concept has expanded to include any relationship, resulting in an entire "Letters to..." Series.

Why would you write a letter for healing? Judilyn Brown, a Letters to Fathers contributor, says "... my father and I had a wonderful healing conversation after I e-mailed him a copy of my letter [for the book]. Our relationship is more open and forgiving now."

The healing can apply to any relationship, any time. No need to wait for a special day such as Mother's or Father's Day to write a letter for healing. Sharing these letters can be a gift that no one else can give.

For those who wish to experience the benefit of writing a letter for healing, free information is provided on the 5 Simple Steps and Year of Healing pages at lettersforhealing.com.

One friend of the authors, who is both a father and stepfather, commented, "I didn't think this book would have something for me until I started reading it. It makes me want to be a better father!"

Available soon: "Putting Your Heart on Paper: A Guide to Writing Letters for Healing," explores how to write letters for healing; "Letters to Fathers from Daughters, Vol. 2" and "Letters to Fathers from Sons." Details at http://www.lettersforhealing.com/.
