The Harder They Fall: Celebrities Tell Their Real-Life Stories of Addiction and Recovery

Updated with Photos and New Interviews

CENTER CITY, Minn., July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- We're all fascinated with the notion of "celebrity." The idea of fame and all its trappings can be very seductive -- the money, the glory, the glitz and the glamour are very exciting. The complete loss of anonymity and the seemingly constant media scrutiny can be overwhelming. In order to cope, some celebrities have turned to alcohol and drugs for help, only to find that what they thought would make their time in the spotlight easier is actually killing their career, and many times, their lives as well.

SRA/McGraw-Hill Launches New Edition of Reading Intervention Program, Kaleidoscope

SRA/McGraw-Hill Launches New Edition of Reading Intervention Program, Kaleidoscope

New Edition Extends Levels to Include Grades K-8 with Enhanced Language Arts Components

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- For students who need extra reading and language arts intervention in Grades K-8, SRA/McGraw-Hill now offers a new, extended edition of Kaleidoscope, a comprehensive program originally launched in 2003 for Grades 2-6.

SRA Kaleidoscope is designed to prevent struggling readers in Grades K-1 from falling behind and to bring Grades 2-8 students performing two or more years behind up to grade level. This effective, research-based program meets the Response to Intervention (RtI) requirements of the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Kaleidoscope condenses the essence of SRA's latest basal reading and language arts program, Imagine It! It is designed to deliver two years of instruction in a single year. It can be used with other basal programs as well.

Daily lessons address each of the five critical areas of reading:
-- Phonemic Awareness
-- Phonics
-- Fluency
-- Vocabulary
-- Comprehension

In addition, Kaleidoscope provides targeted instruction in decoding, word study, dictation, grammar, mechanics, writing, and spelling.

"In this edition, the language arts elements are much stronger than before. We have provided additional vocabulary activities, and the vocabulary strategies are more explicit. Spelling lists and practice activities have been added. And, writing is much more robust," said Sue Andrews, SRA director of marketing for reading and language arts. "In addition, Differentiated Instruction activities for independent, small groups, and collaborative groups have also been added."

The program offers everything a teacher needs to teach while building student engagement, motivation, and accomplishment, including:

-- An Intervention Package which contains all core teacher materials
including Teacher Editions, Blackline Masters, Annotated Teacher
Editions and many more teacher components
-- Themed lessons
-- Differentiated instruction
-- Integrated technology
-- Assessment
-- Hard cover Student Readers with high interest, lower readability
reading selections
-- Leveled Readers for Intervention for additional practice in fluency,
vocabulary, and comprehension

History of Success

Research has demonstrated consistent success in schools using the previous edition of SRA Kaleidoscope to bring struggling readers up to grade level.

For example, Lawton Chiles Elementary School in Gainesville, Fla., showed positive results. On tests measuring words read per minute, students gained an average of 24.5 words!

AFP Annual Conference to Feature Business Icon Jack Welch Interviewed By Emmy- Award Winning Correspondent Elizabeth Vargas

AFP Annual Conference to Feature Business Icon Jack Welch Interviewed By Emmy- Award Winning Correspondent Elizabeth Vargas

Legendary Business Leader's Interview will be the Highlight of the Opening General Session at AFP Annual Conference

BETHESDA, Md., July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Association for Financial Professionals (AFP) is honored to host an interview by Emmy award-winning anchor Elizabeth Vargas of General Electric's (GE) longest-running CEO and business powerhouse John Francis "Jack" Welch, Jr. to open this year's AFP Annual Conference. AFP's 2007 Annual Conference will take place in Boston beginning on October 21.

"To have one of the most respected journalists in the world interviewing one of the most inspiring CEOs of his time will provide the financial professionals attending the Open Session of our conference an exciting and revealing look into the world of a business icon," said Jim Kaitz, CEO and President of AFP. "Mr. Welch's success in making GE the household name it is today provides inspiring lessons for professionals at all stages of their careers."

Jack Welch joined GE in 1960 and was devoted to changing the very thing that nearly drove him to leaving the company only after one year -- bureaucracy. In 1981, Mr. Welch became the eighth Chairman and CEO of GE. Welch's business acumen and innovative style was the driving force behind the growth of one of the country's most successful brands. During his tenure, GE's market value grew from $13 billion to $400 billion. Upon his retirement in 2001, Welch wrote his number one New York Times and international best-selling autobiography, JACK: Straight From the Gut.

Mr. Welch is currently the head of Jack Welch, LLC, where he serves as an advisor to a small group of Fortune 500 business CEOs and speaks to business people and students around the world. He also teaches a leadership course at MIT's Sloan School of Management and writes a weekly column for Business Week magazine.

Mr. Welch will be joined by ABC News Special anchor and correspondent Elizabeth Vargas, whose investigative talents led her to Cambodia reporting on questionable international adoption practices and the plight of the orphans; to the U.S. Gulf Coast covering Hurricane Katrina's devastation; and to Baghdad where she anchored World News Tonight reporting on the historic Iraqi elections. Vargas won an Emmy in 2000 for live coverage of the Elian Gonzalez case. Ms. Vargas can be seen co-anchoring ABC's 20/20 Friday nights at 10 p.m. EST.

The AFP Annual Conference is the premier event for treasury and finance professionals. This industry event attracts over 6,000 people from around the world bringing them under one roof to network with peers and learn about new industry information, how to do business in emerging markets, protect their business against risk, streamline operational processes, seek new market opportunities, and much more. This year, Jack Welch and Elizabeth Vargas headline an impressive list of accomplished speakers including U.S. Comptroller General David Walker and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.

The AFP Exhibit Hall will feature hundreds of exhibitors showcasing new products, services and solutions for the treasury and finance industry. Attendees will have over 130 professional development opportunities including seminars, roundtables, and networking events.

This year's AFP Annual Conference will be held in Boston from October 21- 24. To register or for more information visit http://www.afponline.org/conference.

Clayton Holdings Offers New 'Suitability' Analysis For Non-Traditional Mortgages

Clayton Holdings Offers New 'Suitability' Analysis For Non-Traditional Mortgages

SHELTON, Conn., July 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Clayton Holdings (NASDAQ:CLAY), a leading provider of information-based analytics, outsourcing and consulting solutions to capital markets firms, lending institutions, fixed income investors and loan servicers, today announced the availability of a new analytic tool to help large lenders and Wall Street conduits determine whether the closed loans they are buying meet the most prevalent 'suitability' standards.

(Logo:

http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070509/CLAYTONLOGO )

"Our clients are looking to us to help them understand and work through the issue of suitability," said Keith Johnson, Clayton's Chief Operating Officer. "We decided to take a proactive approach and begin giving our clients the analytic tools that they will need to comply with the most-widely discussed suitability proposals."

Though suitability was a hot button before the current crisis, the issue has gained momentum as subprime loan defaults and foreclosures have mounted. "Suitability" refers to lender's responsibility to ensure that a specific loan is suitable for a specific borrower. Although there are currently no universally accepted standards of what constitutes "suitability," many observers expect that coming regulations will focus on: the borrower's documented ability to repay, excessive risk of multiple loans and "exotic" loan products, such as interest only, pay option adjustable rate mortgages and 2/28 hybrid ARMS. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac recently announced that they would buy only those mortgages on the secondary market that comply with interagency guidelines on non-traditional and exotic mortgages released July 13. Most commentary to date has referenced ensuring "safe and sound underwriting practices."

"There are layers to the debate -- and the definitions -- around suitability and non-traditional mortgages," said Johnson. "Rather than wait for it to be fully defined and legislated, we assessed the issues currently being debated, spoke with our clients and determined what is immediately needed to address this issue."

The first release of Clayton's Suitability product, which is included in Clayton's proprietary loan analysis system (CLAS) and available to all clients, focuses on payment shock and recalculates the ability to pay using a fully indexed, full-amortized schedule. An optional, add-on module that addresses additional non-traditional guidance issues will be available in late September. This second module will capture non-traditional mortgage (NTM) procedures, such as no income and no asset verification or stated income loans that are being taken by W-2 employees. Clayton clients will be able to adjust their ability-to-pay thresholds, at the loan level, to determine the suitability of the loan during due diligence.

"We started with payment shock analysis because we want our clients to be fully prepared to address the core issue surrounding this topic now, regardless of when comprehensive suitability legislation is enacted," said Johnson. "The second release in September adds the type of layered risk capabilities that drives additional value for our clients and could be a very useful tool to address this issue during post close QC."

"Clayton will continue to enhance our offering to provide additional services as the issues around suitability and non traditional mortgages evolve," he added.

Detroit Press Club 'Steakout' Returns for Another Year - Politicians, Business Leaders and the Detroit Lions: Beware!

Detroit Press Club 'Steakout' Returns for Another Year - Politicians, Business Leaders and the Detroit Lions: Beware!

Detroit Goodfellows and Detroit Press Club Foundation to Share Proceeds

Tickets now on sale at P.O. Box and next week at detroitsteakout.com

Only 1,000 seats will be available this year

You will laugh your butt off - or your money back! (Not really.)

DETROIT, July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Much to the dismay of Matt Millen, Governor Jennifer Granholm, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, L. Brooks Patterson, Bob Ficano, who-ever-it-is-in-Macomb-County-that-replaced-Nancy White, Matt Millen, Doctor Kevorkian, Michael Vick and many other newsmakers, the Detroit Press Club Steakout is back for another year. Did we mention Matt Millen? The 30th-something version of Steakout (our historian embezzled our kitty and fled the country) will be Thursday evening, November 1 at the Marriott Renaissance in Detroit.

The Steakout is the annual, off-the-record and often tastefully tasteless parody show designed with one goal in mind: To lampoon the state of Michigan's newsmakers and rule breakers. It began more than 30 years ago as Detroit's version of the Gridiron Club. After serving a 12-year sentence for bad behavior, the Steakout returned two years ago to critical acclaim ... unless, of course, you live your life in the public eye.

This year's Steakout is entitled "Detroit Idle." No other explanation will be given until showtime.

"If you're famous in this state, and you've done something illegal, immoral or, well, just plain stupid, we're gunning for you," said Chrysler's Jason Vines, co-chair for the event along with WWJ/UofM -- Dearborn's Tim Kiska and Ed Lapham from Automotive News. "And if you haven't, then we'll make something up."

As was the case the past two years, all proceeds from the Steakout will be donated to the Goodfellows, the Old Newsboys' charity that annually provides needy local children with Christmas gifts, and the Detroit Press Club Foundation, which provides scholarships for journalism students.

"We thought about donating it to the State of Michigan but the Governor said she was all set," Kiska said.

"As was the policy of last year's Steakout, there will be no full frontal nudity, unless of course a coach of a particular local sports team is trolling through the fast food nation," Vines added.

For many years, Steakout was the must attend event of the year. It has featured such notables as Mayors Young and Kilpatrick, Governors Milliken, Blanchard and Engler, Ted Koppel, Oprah Winfrey, Siskel and Ebert, Dan Rather, Sonny Eliot and L. Brooks Patterson.

The event features a cocktail reception beginning at 6 p.m. sponsored by Chrysler and Toyota and other companies yet-to-be targeted. Dinner follows at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. The highlight of the program will, again, be the awarding of the Steakout Lifetime Achievement Award, given annually to the newsmaker that gives the media the most material or "raw meat." The past two winners were Patterson and Mayor Kilpatrick.

"Mayor Kilpatrick was a gracious recipient last year, once we told him that he wouldn't be sitting with Steve Wilson," Lapham said. "We hope to have him back this year to pass the award along to another poor soul ... I mean lucky winner."

"We won't announce the winner until the night of the event for three reasons," said Vines. "Potential incarceration at the time of the show, buying the farm or someone else deserves the award because of something done between now and showtime."

The ticket price for the Steakout will be $150 this year, which works out to approximately 28 cents per laugh. Tickets can be purchased on detroitsteakout.com or by mailing a check to "Steakout, P.O. Box 255, Eastpointe, MI 48021. A total of 1,000 tickets are available for the event. Tables of 10 are the suggested purchase.

'Wind Power Shanghai 2007' to be Held in Shanghai in November

'Wind Power Shanghai 2007' to be Held in Shanghai in November

Faced with the Changing Weather, People May Put Wind Power Into Greater Use

SHANGHAI, China, July 25 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Shanghai International Exhibition Co., Ltd. (SIEC) announced that "Wind Power Shanghai 2007" will be held in Shanghai from November 1 to November 3, 2007. The exhibition will be jointly held by Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Chinese Wind Energy Association (CWEA) and Shanghai International Exhibition Co., Ltd. (SIEC); and is believed to be the most important event for China's wind power industry in this year.

The exhibition will be attended by manufacturers of wind turbine, providers of components and supporting equipment for wind power generating facilities, as well as wind power service providers. The exhibition has a projected occupation area of 10,000 sq m. 7 world leading wind turbine manufactures, namely Vestas, GE, Suzlon, Nordex, Siemens, Repower, and Acciona, have signed contracts to attend the exhibition. Internally famous wind power enterprises such as Shanghai Electric, Windey, and NGC also will be on the list of attendees; while Britain, renowned for its rapidly developing off shore wind power, will appear in the air as an international exposition delegation. Enterprises providing supporting equipments such as manufacturers of gears, fasteners, composite material, lubricants, and electric enterprises are also avid about attending the exhibition. Adding to the attendee list, service enterprises related to wind power equipment such as enterprises of authentication, wind measurement, consultation, meteorology, operation, and investment also will participate in this event.

During the event, the organizers will hold a high-ranking forum which will be attended by approximately 400 people; a large number of wind power experts, entrepreneurs, and governmental officials will be invited to join the forum. Topics cover the status quo and projection of wind power development at home and abroad, policy and market, off shore wind power exploitation, wind resource and meteorology, wind power generating technologies, wind power network, wind power project investment, et al.

The appeal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly gaining ground; as a sort of clean and efficient energy source, wind power has already shown great potential in the facets of coping with weather change, alleviating energy security pressure, meeting energy needs. For the moment, global wind power generating capacity has surpassed 70,000,000 KW, with a yearly market value of 12 billion euros (an equivalent to $14 billion). Although the biggest wind power market is seen in Europe for the moment, development in Asia, North America, and other regions is also quite rapid. In 2006, the increase rate in China scored as high as 65%.

China is endowed with a bountiful pool of available wind power resource measuring 1 billion KW (250 million KW on land, 750 million KW offshore). According to the objective set forth by China's wind power development plan, countrywide wind power generating capacity will reach 50 and 300 million KW by 2010 and 2020. In the course of "11th five-year plan" a total number of 30 large-scale wind power projects with individual capacities of 100,000 KW will be set up in China's wind power resource-rich regions, namely the eastern coast, the northwest, north, and northeast regions of China.

"Wind Power Shanghai 2007" will come as a full-aspect, multi-level platform of information communication, cooperation, and trade for China's rapidly-developing wind power market and industry, and will give impetus to the further prosperity of wind power causes across the world and throughout China alike.

(LifeWatch) as the recipient of the 2007 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Business Development Strategy Leadership for bolstering its position in the cardiac monitoring and diagnostic services market. It has achieved this through the continuing consolidation with device manufacturer, LifeWatch Technologies Inc. (Instromedix) and LifeWatch Services Inc.

In the highly competitive and fragmented cardiac monitoring and diagnostic services market, consolidation is important to overall market success and new growth opportunities.

LifeWatch and Instromedix, both are subsidiaries of Card Guard AG, have actively pursued business development by combining offices into a new set up in Chicago.

"Companies in the service segment will do well to have device manufacturing facilities closely integrated with their service components to make internal processes more streamlined and efficient," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Zachary Bujnoch. "LifeWatch scored by having an intimate level of integration with its device manufacturer, since the mature device market has been exceedingly competitive."

LifeWatch is focusing on the service segment for the overall company, as it is much larger than the product segment. With the market so fragmented, companies that can internally consolidate their resources gain an edge over those that cannot, thereby increasing their market penetration and customer loyalty.

"The move to the Chicago office will undoubtedly strengthen LifeWatch and Instromedix as they move to a new phase of growth, and it will also reinforce Lifewatch's technological position in the market," notes Bujnoch.

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has best demonstrated excellence in business development within the industry. The Award recognizes the company's ability to develop products and/or services that best meet consumer needs, successfully introduce products or services to the industry, and identify new market segments to expand the existing customer base. Through a combination of vision, technology, and successful marketing, the company has demonstrated superior market growth skills.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
